In September 2024, the C4U Consortium gathered in Nijmegen (the Netherlands) for the project’s 9th General Assembly (GA).

General Assemblies provide a necessary space for the C4U Consortium to gather in person, assess the project’s progress, and discuss future points of action. This 9th iteration came at a crucial time: with C4U set to conclude its activities in March 2025, the team has made significant progress towards the last goals of this research project. Among the most recent achievements is the publication of the C4U Policy Brief series, which delves into three interconnected challenges of Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) deployment in the EU: (a) optimising CCUS technologies at the cluster level, (b) incentivising CCUS in a societally acceptable way in industrial clusters, and (c) developing business models for industrial CCUS infrastructure.

Hosted by C4U partner Radboud University, this GA also brought many opportunities for the C4U Consortium to explore historical Nijmegen – the oldest city in the Netherlands, having celebrated more than 2,000 years of existence. We also had the pleasure of meeting with the team from Carbyon, a start-up company advancing research to turn Direct Air Capture (DAC) into an affordable and scalable technology for climate change mitigation. We are grateful for their warm welcome and the insightful tour of their facilities.

Since its onset in 2020, C4U has advanced an extensive and interdisciplinary body of research on the integration of CO2 capture in the iron and steel industry as part of the CCUS chain. This GA allowed us to discuss the progress made so far and, importantly, the actions needed to maximise our work in the coming months. You can expect to hear much from us in the coming months: in particular, the C4U Consortium is now getting ready for extensive participation at the Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies (GHGT-17) conference, which will take place in Calgary (Canada) on October 20-24. We look forward to sharing the resultant work in the coming weeks.

Many thanks to Radboud University and all C4U Consortium members for this very fruitful assembly!
