We are excited to share that C4U has been awarded as the UK National Winner at the Mission Innovation 2024 Net-Zero Industries Award – ‘Outstanding Projects’ category. This award was publicly announced at the Australian Pavilion at COP29 in Baku (Azerbaijan).

Launched at COP21 by 20 founding countries, Mission Innovation (MI) is a global initiative committed to catalysing action and investment in research, development, and demonstration to make clean energy affordable, attractive, and accessible for all. MI is an ambitious driver of progress towards the Paris Agreement goals and pathways to net zero. We are very honoured to be recognised by this global initiative as a leading innovator for industrial decarbonization, in the United Kingdom and beyond.

Over the past four years, the Horizon 2020 project C⁴U has sought to address the many challenges of CCS deployment by producing cutting-edge research and technology enabling viable pathways for CCS roll-out. This includes the demonstration of two highly efficient CO2 capture technologies at TRL7, designed for optimal integration into an iron and steel plant. Overall, C4U is a first-of-its-kind project, in researching technology development alongside safety, environmental, societal, policy and business aspects for the technologies’ successful incorporation into the North Sea Port CCUS cluster.

Speaking of this exciting recognition, C4U Project Coordinator Prof. Haroun Mahgerefteh shared:

“It is incredibly gratifying to see the hard work and dedication of the C4U Consortium recognized through such a prestigious award.

Over the past five years, our team has made crucial advancements in developing and testing groundbreaking solutions to mitigate CO2 emissions from the steelmaking industry, which is considered one of the largest anthropogenic emitters in the world. Leading this work has been an absolute honour.”

As we reach the project closure in March 2025, we are excited to continue our work in the decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries. Many thanks to NIM – The Net-Zero Industries Mission for this honour, and congratulations as well to all our partners within the C4U Consortium, who have made this achievement possible.
